I used to use ubuntu long back. I have a feeling you need to install some
packages for videos to show up. I remember when I had missed out some
packages, I used to get only sound, but unlike your case, I didn't have video
even for a moment.

Try:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

Once you have followed the info there and got all packages, try again. If
that doesn't work, report back here again.

One point: When you mail to the list, always 'reply' in the same thread. If
you make a new thread (like now), it will be difficult for people to track
your problem. Since you use gmail, I guess you know what I mean :)

PS:
All list pros, I think we will have more newbies joining the community
after SFD. Lets be very forgiving, and make them feel warm and fuzzy

on the mailing list joining pages served on the wiki, and the static site.
