Sorry, I missed something.

New codes are guarded by predefined EDITABLE_LS_COLORS_PALETTE. So you
should give CPPFLAGS option when you configure gnome-commander.
For example,

# CPPFLAGS+=-DEDITABLE_LS_COLORS_PALETTE ./configure
