I understand what you mean ! And of course, you're right.

But think of this: 

If we had custom columns, Piotr could set up default columns "user" and "group" 
displaying the string value. Some freaky geek could deselct that, and set up 
"uid"  and "gid" instead, displaying the figure values. Now if there's no 
"user" or "group" column left, why should gcmd resolve that generally in 
background at all ? It could do the necessary stuff if it's requested (by 
Alt+Edit) only, instead.
