I think it's caused by line #255 of configure.in:
    AM_CHECK_PYTHON_HEADERS([],[have_python=no])
please replace that with
    AM_CHECK_PYTHON_HEADERS([have_python=yes],[have_python=no])
as a workaround

I use python-2.4.4
