I think what Christian is suggesting is that we should make the view and
edit operations on a file more flexible. Today only a default
application can be configured, but what christian want is to be able to
override those default apps for some file types.

That would make it possible to have for example galeon as the "viewer"
and bluefish as the "editor" for html files. This can't be done with the
mime database as it only supports one "open with" application for each
mime type.
