I've got it compiling, and it now fails with:
[grimreaper] /usr/ports/lang/gcl/work/gcl-2.5.3/unixport # gmake saved_gcl
ls: ../pcl/*.o: No such file or directory
ls: ../clcs/*.o: No such file or directory
cc -O -pipe -mcpu=pentiumpro -DVOL=volatile -I/usr/ports/lang/gcl/work/gcl-2.5.3
/o -fsigned-char -Wall -fomit-frame-pointer -o raw_gcl \
-L. -lgcl -lm -lreadline -lcompat -lc -lgclp
cp init_gcl.lsp foo
echo " (in-package \"USER\")(system:save-system \"saved_gcl\")" >>foo
./raw_gcl ./ -libdir /usr/ports/lang/gcl/work/gcl-2.5.3/ < foo
GCL (GNU Common Lisp) April 1994 32768 pages
Building symbol table for ./raw_gcl ..
loading ./../lsp/export.lsp
Initializing defmacro.o

rm raw_gcl
Any clues?
My ./configure arguments are
PREFIX= /usr/local
CONFIGURE_ARGS= --enable-machine=FreeBSD \
--enable-tkconfig=${PREFIX}/lib \
--enable-tclconfig=${PREFIX}/lib \
--x-includes=/usr/X11R6/include \

--enable-dlopen \
--disable-statsysbfd
