Greetings!

1) The invocation history stack has recently been increased by a
   factor of 4.  Try current CVS -- your code works there for me.
   http://savannah.gnu.org/projects/gcl 

2) The system stack size is not relevant here, as you have discovered,
   but GCL's internal stack structures.

3) Latest stable release is 2.4.3, and in general CVS is still yet
   quite a bit better.
