Videos for the talks are linked below. * * * * ### Happy 20th birthday to the GNOME Project *From August 15th by GNOME* Today, the GNOME Project proudly celebrated its 20th birthday. Founded by Miguel de Icaza and Federico Mena Quintero on August 15, 1997, GNOME has since become a pillar of the free software community. * ### The Licensing and Compliance Lab interviews David Rosca of QupZilla *From August 15th* QupZilla, currently at version 2.1.2, is a free software Web browser using the new and very fast QtWebEngine browser. It aims to be a lightweight Web browser available through all major platforms. This project was originally started only for educational purposes by a lone developer, David Rosca, and since then, QupZilla has grown into a feature-rich browser. * ### May and June 2017: Photos from Richard Stallman's talks in Curitiba and Brasilia *From August 1st* RMS was in Brazil from late May to mid-June. In addition to speaking in Belo Horizonte, on May 29th, he visited Campinas, where he gave a free-standing speech, “Your Freedom as a User of Computers and Cell Phones,” on May 31st, at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas. He then went on to Curitiba, where he was a guest of the Universidade Federal do Paraná. * ### Richard Stallman – the freedom defender whom we may not deserve but definitely need *From August 29th by Alok Soni* Richard Matthew Stallman, the subject of this week’s Techie Tuesdays, is a unique force to reckon with. As the founder of the FSF and the GNU Project, he has done more for the free software movement and for humanity than most. * ### Are Internet standards standing in the way of digital accessibility? *From August 3rd by David M. Perry* The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has been engaged in a debate about whether the next generation of online videos will be accessible. If we don't want to be forced to choose between excluding disabled users or taking tens of thousands of videos away from the public, the W3C had better get this one right. * ### Technoethical T400s review *From August 19th by Franz Gratzer* I am very excited that you can actually order hardware nowadays that others have checked for best compatibility already. Since my old laptop got very unreliable recently I wanted to do better this time and I went for the Technoethical T400s, which comes pre-installed with Trisquel. I am very pleased with the excellent customer care and the quality of the laptop itself. * ### Ethereum Foundation recommends against EME measures *From August 23rd by Jeremy Nation* On August 21, 2017, the Ethereum Foundation issued a statement in opposition to the publication of Encrypted Media Extensions (EME) as a W3C Recommendation. The Ethereum Foundation is a member of the W3C, and according to the statement, it objects to EME and Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) in general, as many of its developers conduct security research and build Web technology. * ### Software Freedom Conservancy announces North Bay Python Conference *From August 16th by Software Freedom Conservancy* Software Freedom Conservancy announced on August 16th that North Bay Python, a regional conference in Petaluma, California designed to be inclusive and affordable, has become Conservancy’s first member project dedicated to organizing community events. Conservancy, a public charity focused on ethical technology, is home to over forty member projects dedicated to developing and promoting free and open source software. * ### Summer FSF internship wrapup *From August 16th and 17th* Two talented young programmers interned with our systems administration team in the summer of 2017. In these blogs, they describe their contributions to the encryption schema of the GNU server cluster, an audit of existing infrastructure, LibreJS, JSHint, and other projects. Thanks, Andrew and Ethan! * * ### GNU Press spotlight: Collapsable FSF totes are totally terrific Show your support for free software, and carry your groceries in style! Our tote bags are spacious and tough enough to lug everything from six-packs to laptops, but fold up to about the size of a baseball, so you can take your tote along everywhere you go and unfold it at a moment's notice. * ### August Free Software Directory meeting recaps Check out the great work our volunteers accomplished at the August Free Software Directory meetings. Every week free software activists from around the world come together in #fsf on irc.freenode.org to help improve the Free Software Directory. *August 11 meeting* * *August 18 meeting* * ### Join the FSF and friends in updating the Free Software Directory Tens of thousands of people visit directory.fsf.org each month to discover free software. Each entry in the Directory contains a wealth of useful information, from basic category and descriptions to version control, IRC channels, documentation, and licensing. The Free Software Directory has been a great resource to software users over the past decade, but it needs your help staying up-to-date with new and exciting free software projects. To help, join our weekly IRC meetings on Fridays. Meetings take place in the #fsf channel on irc.freenode.org, and usually include a handful of regulars as well as newcomers. Freenode is accessible from any IRC client -- Everyone's welcome! The next meeting is Friday, September 8 from 12pm to 3pm EDT (16:00 to 19:00 UTC). Details here: * ### LibrePlanet featured resource: Group: Translation Every month on LibrePlanet, we highlight one resource that is interesting and useful -- often one that could use your help. For this month, we are highlighting the Group: Translation page, which collects together the international translators who ensure that free software activists all over the world can share information about free software in their own language. You are invited to adopt, spread and improve this important resource. * Do you have a suggestion for next month's featured resource? Let us know at . ### GNU Spotlight with Brandon Invergo: Fifteen new GNU releases! * [binutils-2.29](https://www.gnu.org/software/binutils/) * [datamash-1.2](https://www.gnu.org/software/datamash/) * [denemo-2.2.0](http://www.denemo.org) * [freeipmi-1.5.7](https://www.gnu.org/software/freeipmi/) * [gcc-7.2.0](https://www.gnu.org/software/gcc/) * [glibc-2.26](https://www.gnu.org/software/glibc/) * [glpk-4.63](https://www.gnu.org/software/glpk/) * [gnuchess-6.2.5](https://www.gnu.org/software/chess/) * [gnupg-2.1.23](https://www.gnu.org/software/gnupg/) * [gnutls-3.6.0](https://www.gnu.org/software/gnutls/) * [guile-cv-0.1.6](https://www.gnu.org/software/guile-cv/) * [libcdio-paranoia-10.2+0.94+2](https://www.gnu.org/software/libcdio/doxygen/libcdio-paranoia/files.html) * [linux-libre-4.12.8-gnu](https://www.gnu.org/software/linux-libre/) * [parallel-20170822](https://www.gnu.org/software/parallel/) * [pspp-1.0.0](https://www.gnu.org/software/pspp/) For announcements of most new GNU releases, subscribe to the info-gnu mailing list: .
