I suggest that you look at the FreeType demo programs like `ftdiff' or
`ftview'.

This looks OK to me.

The color filter assumes that the background is white, not black, and
yes, the colour artifacts can be quite visible.

The bitmap size is not `width*rows' but rather `pitch*rows'.
