There is more than a single solution, depending on the context, for
example, rendering on white, rendering on black, rendering on coloured
backgtround, etc., etc.  Where should FreeType stop?

It is `bad' enough that FreeType supports simple kerning -- from time
to time people ask whether the other, more recent kerning method (via
GPOS, which is getting more and more popular) is supported by
FreeType...
