Your configure script says:
> checking for X... no
This means that the X11 include files couldn't be found which are
necessary for compiling some demo programs. I think you have to
install a package from your Red Hat distribution which is called
`X11-devel' (or something similar) to get the X header fonts.
Otherwise, get the latest FreeType 1.x snapshot; then you can say
./configure --witout-x
to disable the compilation of the demo programs which need X11.
