Very nice idea, thanks!  Nikolaus, do you agree?

Having available both algorithms in parallel is mainly for developers,
of course.  Look, removing the whole stuff shouldn't be too hard in
the future thanks to proper #ifdef blocks, so I like the way it is
currently implemented.
