Not sure if this helps but it looks like it may!!

I was playing in Fontforge with the prep table of a thin weight ttfautohinted 
font, trying to prevent pixel 'drop out'.
At one point  i simply replaced the whole prep table with 

PUSHW_1
 511
SCANCTRL
PUSHB_1
 4
SCANTYPE

The result (on Win XP greyscale and Cleartype) looked a LOT like the shredded 
rendering on iOS!

The shredding looks very much like under iOS. Could it be that Apple's render 
engine on iOS doesn't like something in the prep tables of ttfautohinted fonts ?
Maybe the instructions are fine, but the prep table is causing the issue? 
Something missing perhaps?
