Thank you for your information.
As your suggestion, I installed the latest stable FreeType-2.3.7, then
compile and run my demo program on RHEL5 x86 64bit again, it produces
correctly "0".
Thanks Eugene for your kind support to install FreeType-2.3.7 on my RHEL5.

I've just compiled your demo program on my GNU/Linux box, using the
current CVS version of FreeType, and it correctly reports `0'.
It's generally a good idea to always use the latest FreeType version
-- or if that fails to check whether the current CVS gives the correct
result.
