Have you added the library file to the "project settings/link/general/object 
library modules" or "project settings/link/input/object library modules"

Thanks for that, Patrick! I THINK you're eluding to the visualc project
folder available under builds/win32 but I'll look into that immediately
after posting (and edit if it helps).

could you elaborate on that further? I've gotten both a dll and a lib file,
and both of them exist in C:\Program Files\FreeType\lib, which i've included
in the library path in my Visual C++ settings. But I have found, that
removing the files from that location doesn't make the linkage problems any
worse, suggesting its not finding it at all. I've also copied the dll file
into C:\WINDOWS\system32 as I've often found necessary, but still, no worky.
