I just tested it using the unstable snapshot (2.1.9) from June 13th and it looks like this problem is resolved. Changing the calling convention and running against that lib did not result in any runtime error.

I am eagerly awaiting the final release of 2.1.9.  :)

No, you have to check out the current CVS (or use a current snapshot)
to get a fix.  Until now I haven't received a positive feedback that
the patched code really solves the problem...  In case it works for
you, please send a mail.

David, I suggest we release 2.1.9 within the next few weeks due to
this problem.
