The problem with making the patch work in the vertical direction is that the 
third (the lowest) stem might end up a pixel above or below the baseline.  
So, unless you would want to actually consider vertical symmetry in 
determining the blue zones (which I think is not worth the sacrifice), I 
think this method is only applicable to the horizontal direction.
