Xft2 also has code that performs pixel-component level tuning of the data, 
something which (apparently) is currently duplicated in FreeType.  It may 
be that Xft's filter is different from that in FreeType.  Otherwise, you 
are quite correct -- the intent is for Xft to be a glue-layer that plugs 
the FreeType rasterizer into X applications.
