It looks very nice!  Do you already have something in mind how
charmap support in FT should be changed?

A minor one after a first quick reading: Please modify t1_chartoint()
to make it work with non-ASCII also -- as you may know, the ranges
'A'-'Z' and 'a'-'z' are not contiguous e.g. in EBCDIC.
