Juliusz mentioned that he'd discovered a (slightly) more reliable way of
determining that fonts were fixed pitch using a combination of several
values found in the font header. Perhaps he'd be willing to share that so
that FreeType could provide a better hint in this case. Xft now ignores
the value found in the file which makes matching only fixed-pitch fonts
impossible. Of course, Xft allows applications to *specify* fixed-pitch
as an attribute, in which case Xft forces a constant spacing value on the
font---fonts which aren't naturally fixed width end up looking pretty bad
in this case.
