Regarding bug
#22270: Kerning Doesn't Work
https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?22270
I have confirmed that FreeSerif's kerning is broken in OpenOffice Writer.
FreeSans kerns in that application, and other fonts do as well.
Any idea what might be wrong?
The story is more complicated though. Most Linux apps don't do kerning.
Firefox and KWord (surprisingly) seem to be completely ignorant of it.
Curiously, the gedit editor kerns nicely with all the fonts I tried,
including FreeFont.
OpenOffice, with the (characteristically deeply buried) switch
Format->Character->Position->Pair Kerning
also does kerning, but not with FreeFont.
Here are the results of my tests (table formatted for fixed-width font)
FFr FFri FFs Tr Tri DVr DVri DVs DVsi
g y y y y y y y y y
oo n n n y y y y y y
g = gedit
oo = oowriter
FF= FreeFont
T = Times New Roman
DV = DejaVu
r = roman (serif)
s = sans
i = italic
