If you don't know that you need jack, then you probably don't need it.

Jack's main purpose is low-latency. If you are playing a midi file,
you almost certainly don't care. If you are connecting a midi keyboard
to your computer, to work with rosegarden or similar, and want the
sound to come out of the speakers at the moment you hit the key,
you'll need jack.
