PulseAudio is installed by default in Ubuntu, along with its ALSA plugin.

$ aplay -L
pulse
    Playback/recording through the PulseAudio sound server

The ALSA configuration file is /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf, that loads a
pulse.conf file among others.

There is a program "pavucontrol" showing the different playing audio streams,
with controls to manage their volume levels.
