No, the behaviour has not changed.  What has changed, however, is that
Enigma reports errors more aggressively.  In this case, the problematic
code was

function send_message_to_group( group, message, arg )
    for i,object in group do
        send_message( object, message, arg )

The loop also visits the special field "n", which does not contain an
object but the table size.  It works perfectly with

    for i=1,getn(group) do
        local object = group[i]
