Please try $ strace firefox $ strace emacs Notice that after things settle, firefox gives the CPU or whatever several seconds of rest between polling etc. activity, whilst emacs causes a constant stream. I notice when I exited emacs, my laptop fan soon was able to take rest breaks. With an emacs running, even idle, the fan never stops! (Well sometimes it never stops anyway (Celeron M, no power saving)) Can you please add an .emacs option allowing a different algorithm than the current one.
Please customize `jit-lock-stealth-time' according to your needs. It's probably the non-nil value here vs. your laptop fan.
