    Anyway, someone suggested that I try enabling (i.e., uncommenting)
    SIGNALS_VIA_CHARACTERS in s/gnu-linux.h.  I did that, and it worked
    fine -- and in fact has been working fine for months, on both a 2.4
    and a 2.6 kernel.

Ok, let's turn it on.
