Does the X protocol buffer requests like that? Last time I looked, it didn't do much buffering before transmitting on the wire. A user program such as the X server doesn't directly "transmit on the wire"; it writes data to the kernel. I think the kernel has lots of buffering. I don't know whether Linux provides a way to put any limit on the buffering.
