The widget example in the manual is not working

The widget-example function from widget.texi does not work correctly.
When running it a buffer with a lot of widgets is created, but the
widgets do not work when trying to click them with the mouse. 
Strangely, the widgets work when using the keyboard! 

If I do:
M-: (custom-mode) RET

then the widgets start working when using the mouse.

Also, it would be nice if widget-example had an example for a button
with an image on it.

Can somebody please take a look at this?
