no.  this sometimes even remain even when I visit another buffer.  to fix 
this, I can do c-x2 and then c-x1

yes.  vm displays a summary window, message window, and I have a bbdb window 
as well.  the area with no scroll bar is typically where the bbdb window 
was, and sometimes where both the message window and the bbdb window were

dont know.  I am using only the gtk version.
