   I tried your patch and unfortunately it didn't work.

   (convert-standard-filename "/") returned "/" on my system.

Sorry, I responded a little bit too quickly.  On second thought,
`convert-standard-filename' is something to be used on files that are
supposed to have names following certain standards, like files
containing user profile data, and not on default-directory.
