extreme lagging

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

Starting with the cvs version from 04-01-2004 i have extreme lagging
in emacs. i-search-forward need for example 0.08 seconds compared
with 0.008 on my old cvs from November last year. But that just one
example. I found lagging in almost all parts of emacs. The CPU usage
of emacs jumps wildly up and down even when i just edit a 95K
file. Sometimes i even need 2 Seconds to scroll up and down. Sorry
for not being more precis... :( 

I compiled several versions on two machines and the error occurs in
both cases.


In GNU Emacs 21.3.50.2 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll bars)
