C-c C-c in recover session produces "Args out of range"

Symptoms:

Here's what I see in my recover-session buffer:

 Move to the session you want to recover,
 then type C-c C-c to select it.

 You can also delete some of these files;
 type d on a line to mark that file for deletion.

  /home/aronov/.emacs.d/auto-save-list:

Here's what's in .save-xxx file:

Here's what I get when I do C-c C-c
=> Args out of range: "", 1, -1

Enabling debug-on-error gives me:

Final comment:
      I have seen this happen before, with previous versions of
      Emacs..  I tried the same with "emacs -q" and with "emacs-21.3
      -q".  Same effect.  Any ideas?
