   I think the best way to handle renaming of `.' is to allow it but
   update the buffer in a special way afterwards.  Instead of updating
   the line for `.', it would update the variables and lines that record
   the directory name of the directory.

   Renaming `..' ought to be prohibited, I think.

I agree.  One should perhaps check all dired operations for how they
should handle "." and "..".

   Would you like to write the code?

I don't have the time for this.  Moreover I never found my way through
the code in dired.aux.

Besides, I would rather want to install some changes for cus-edit.el
and cus-dep.el to fix inaccuracies in generating cus-load.el and to
provide a function custom-group-p.

But I don't have the time for this either.  I can do only little
things, once in a while, for instance:

The preloaded files

"emacs-lisp/backquote" "cus-face" "emacs-lisp/timer" "menu-bar"

have autoloads, which therefore appear unnecessarily in loaddefs.el.
Let me know if I should remove the autoload cookies in those files.
