It seems you have something strange in your X resources.  Can you do
% xrdb -query > xrecs

and then mail xrecs here?

You can also try to see if the behavious presists if you do
% xrdb -query > xrecs
% xrdb /dev/null
% emacs

(see if all is well).
% xrdb xrecs
