If there's going to be another pretest, you might consider turning on
the conservative stack marking with the default saving mechanism at
least for Solaris, Irix, SunOS4 and OSF/Alpha under GCC.
21.3 is a bug-fix release. Pretests for 21.3 are clearly the wrong
time to try anything like that.
Instead, maybe we should try this in the trunk. That is the proper
place for more risky changes.
