Another option is to wrap the region in an example or source block:
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
#+begin_example:
_some_funky_underlined_text
#+end_example
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
If you want to tweak such fontification globally, you can use the
variable org-emphasis-alist.
