BTW (not that it matters for this case, but just as a general point), there are corner cases where it might be indeed different: (equal (downcase "ı") (downcase "i")) => nil and currently (equal (upcase "ı") (upcase "i")) => nil but I believe it would be more correct to have (equal (upcase "ı") (upcase "i")) => t -- Stefan
