Assigning copyright involves filling and sending a form to the FSF
copyright clerk, then receiving the assignment contract, signing it,
and returning it to the FSF.  I'm not sure I understand how a single
checkbox could do this.

You ask me for the form to fill, or download it yourself.  Then you
fill the form and email the filled form according to the instructions
that come with the form.  Then you wait for the FSF clerk to prepare
the assignment contract and send it to you.  Then you sign the
contract and send it back.  Then the FSF clerk sends you a copy of the
contract signed both by you and by the FSF.  And then it's done.
