Since my suggestion to the same effect up-thread was voted down, I
think using static linking on a single platform would be a mistake,
from the maintenance POV.

How about reopening that closed ticket on the MSYS2 issue tracker, and
asking them to make the distribution consistent with how they want
users to link against GMP?
