Why? C++ is everywhere these days. I'm in no hurry to move the Emacs core
to C++, but requiring a C++ compiler for the sake of some dependency
shouldn't be a problem. It's good enough for GDB.

Last time I looked, many years ago, there were several bugs (or
differences between TRE and POSIX anyway)
