        An additional data point: Merely loading linum,el(c) does tno
 trigger this. You need to have linum mode active in at least one
 buffer, Turning linum mode off make everything work again.

        The reason I am using lucid mode is that a long time ago I read
 that it worked better when emacs starts as a daemon. If that is not the
 case any more, I will happily stop using that option
