This is basically what I've implemented with `sendmail-query-once' later
in the thread.  :-)

Could you take a look at whether what it does is reasonable, and if so,
I can check in a change that makes it the default.

Yes.  That would be a good long-term solution for GNU/Linux-ey
distributions.
