I mean, the plan is still to default `send-mail-function' and
`message-send-mail-function' on all architectures in Emacs 24 to
`smtpmail-send-it', isn't it?  So there will be mail-related pain² for
old Emacs users, anyway, and we might as well get it over with in one
fell swoop.  :-)

²) The pain will be that the first time you send email on Emacs 24,
it'll prompt you for "Outgoing SMTP mail server: " instead of using the
local MTA, which is the current default on the majority of Linux
installations.
