Once I did that, I kept getting this error (retyped since nothing worked
for keyboard interactions):

Error in post-command-hook (global-font-lock-mode-check-buffers): 
(void-function :-mode)

no matter what I did: `M-:', `M-x', etc. I would get this error.  I had
to exit Emacs to recover.  Fun times.
