As I have explained in another message, I propose to allow symbols for
the identification of the place where to show the progress. These
symbols could belong to the modeline. These symbols shall be made buffer-local.

But then it isn't a global indicator anymore, indeed.

This would still be possible.

This might interfere with minibuffers.
