You know, AUCTeX is in there...  http://elpa.gnu.org/packages/

Chong Yidong and the AUCTeX maintainers spent a lot of time getting the
copyrights done and putting the tarball together.

IMHO big packages are exactly where elpa.gnu.org will be most useful.
