FWIW, on freedesktop.org desktops, "xdg-email" opens the user's preferred mail composer (and takes args for specifying subject/body etc.)

Last time around, the issue of what happens when the user's preferred mail composer desktop setting was then set to emacsclient was of concern due to deadlock opportunities.
