If you just want to keep up-to-date with the latest Emacs, then personally I see no problem with using either: bzr checkout --lightweight http://bzr.savannah.gnu.org/r/emacs/trunk or bzr branch --stacked http://bzr.savannah.gnu.org/r/emacs/trunk When I tried, both of these were fairly quick (~ few minutes), and seemed to use not much more than 250MB resident memory.
