It's possible that when Emacs starts up it uses getaddrinfo to get the
hostname, and the IPv6 spec requires that you get your canonical
hostname from a nameserver. XEmacs currently disobeys the spec by
default because on most networks IPv6 is hardly used even today, and
startup delays can be substantial especially if your Internet
connection is "on-demand" (as it typically was in the days of POTS and
time-metered modem connections, when that decision was made).
