There must be more to it, for example, why are your margins so big? Can you
check /etc/X11/app-defaults (or /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults) if there is any
Emacs or EMacs file in there? Also do
% xrdb -query |grep -i emacs
and see if you get any lines. Let us know what you find.
